US State Secretary Mike Pompeo on November 18 refused to defend the attacked diplomat in US President Donald Trump's impeachment proceedings inquiry and said that he was proud of the State Department.

The Times, citing conversations with two people briefed on the matter, said Sondland told Pompeo in mid-August about a statement he and another U.S. diplomat drafted with the help of Ukrainians that they had hoped would get Trump to agree to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the White House.

As a result,"Pompeo is rethinking his calendar", according to the top Republicans cited in the Time report. Mike Pompeo. Everybody makes mistakes", Trump said on October 25 of Pompeo hiring Taylor.Asked specifically if he has confidence in Taylor, Pompeo instead praised the department in general, saying, "The State Department is doing a fantastic job. There is no indication, however, that he has discussed his plans with Trump. "Pompeo aides previously have denied he was planning to step down".

Trump declassified what is claimed by the White House to be the full transcript of his conversation with Zelensky, saying there was no quid pro quo, and characterizing the impeachment inquiry - launched by the US House in September - as a political witch hunt by Democrats who seek to reverse the result of the 2016 US presidential election.

"State Department workers are constantly defended by me". It says Pompeo's plan had been to remain at the State Department until early spring of next year (2020), but recent developments, including the impeachment probe into President Trump are causing changes.

"Rumors of a Pompeo Senate campaign have circulated for months, and while Pompeo has said repeatedly that he has no intention of running, he has not ruled out a race", Time reported.
