But that often happens because of five main reasons. Nearly 9 in 10 Americans are planning on making some sort of financial resolution for 2020. With just eight percent of resolution-makers actually following through, it's clear that the odds are not in your favor if you choose to join the fad.

It's that time of year again, when people start picking out their (often) unattainable New Year's resolutions.

So make your resolutions, but just remember that you are still the same person, so your plans won't come to fruition unless you push yourself. I have had that for years, it's called alcohol. Losing weight is also hard. This is viewed as a ideal opportunity for most individuals out there to turn a new page in their life, which is why a lot of them tend to create New Year's Resolutions. Indeed they are more than good and helpful for self-improvement.

For starters, Global News reporter Meghan Collie will be taking a look at resetting your mental health for the new year and why a new year - and a new decade, for that matter - is the best time to check in. According to an 1800s German materialistic philosopher Ludwig Feuerbach the "new" comes from exactly that quarter whence it is not looked for, and is always different from what is expected. If your resolution is to lose weight, be specific, such as: "I plan to lose 15 pounds by the end of the year". In fact, a half-hearted attempt is likely to backfire.

When you sit down in front of the TV, perhaps the first thing you do is reach for a bag of chips.

Pick up garbage around the pool deck, straighten up the equipment bins, make an effort to be tidy in the locker room. "If you want to do it but you're not ready, then it's not something you really want, so don't put that energy out there".

"Part of it is monitoring your progress". You can go to a relaxing place, a historical sojourn or an adventurous journey, the experience would be absolutely worth it and add to your personality.

Others expressed a desire to change their diet, expand their mind, work harder, do more and have a positive mind set. How people come to that is extremely various and mysterious. Did you learn the language, or travelled where you wished to? Usually by February your resolution is abandoned and all but forgotten ... but even if you stick with your salad-and-running routine, how can you assess whether you're meeting those resolutions when there's no way to quantify it? Grace Nealy (left): "To plan ahead better". You need to ask yourself, what am I going to lose? Anticipating challenges and identifying solutions is key to long-term success.

While about 40% of Americans set resolutions around January 1, about 40% to 44% of them will be successful at six months, said Norcross, reporting his results from multiple studies with colleagues. In 2018, he eliminated one behavior each month - think alcohol, sweets, screens around his kids, saying the word "like" - and noted the impact of his mood and the effect on himself and his family. You can wake up in March having not taken a single step towards accomplishing your resolution but still feel like you've got plenty of time to get it done. And that's an important part of preventing a misstep from turning into a permanent failure.
