An officer with the Seattle Police Department was arrested Monday and charged with child molestation and communicating with a minor for immoral purposes.
Bothell resident Eric Smith, 57, sexually abused the daughter of his former girlfriend numerous times between 2009 and 2013. During this time the victim was between 7 and 11 years old, according to court documents.
According to the investigation, the victim reportedly first disclosed Smith’s behavior to her mother when she was 7 years old, but recanted after Smith confronted her. She was punished.
Over the following years, the victim told her mother about the abuse two more times, as well as writing notes to her friends and others about it, only to be ignored.
In addition to sexually abusing the victim himself, Smith reportedly tried to get her to have sexual encounters with boys her own age while he watched. Smith also offered to pay her.
An investigation into Smith was opened two weeks ago after the victim stayed late following a school health class on inappropriate touching and told her teacher about Smith’s sexual abuse, according to the charging documents.
Smith has been place on administrative leave. He is currently being held in the Snohomish County Jail.
