A 19-year-old mentally-ill woman was shot and killed by San Jose, California police after she pointed what was later determined to be a cordless power drill at officers, authorities said Thursday.
The woman was shot near Blossom Hill Road and Playa Del Rey shortly before 11 a.m. by Officer Wakana Okuma, a 13-year department veteran, said Sgt. Heather Randol.
The woman, whose name wasn’t released, called police about 10:30 a.m., saying she was in the kitchen with her mother and brother, was armed with “an Uzi” and would shoot her family if police didn’t come, police said.
“We had a call, somebody with an Uzi threatening to kill family members, a very, very serious situation,” said Officer Albert Morales, a police spokesman. “We had communication with this person. Unfortunately, I guess at some point those communications broke down or the officers felt threatened.”
The woman’s father later told officers his daughter had bipolar disorder, authorities said.
